Dave's favorite 'historical fiction'

If you're looking for a good 'historical fiction' novel to read you may enjoy one of the following:

Last Jew by Noah Gordon. In 15th century Spain Jewish citizens are under siege as the Spanish Inquisition quickly spreads its stronghold throughout the country. A moving and powerful novel that will keep readers on the edges of their seats.

Follow the River by James Alexander Thom. Mary Ingles was twenty-three, happily married, and pregnant with her third child when Shawnee Indians invaded her peaceful Virginia settlement in 1755 and kidnapped her, leaving behind a bloody massacre. For months she was held captive but nothing could imprison her spirit. A pioneer woman who risked her life to return to her own people.

The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett. The building of a Gothic cathedral in 12th century feudal England is the setting for this adventure. The author has re-created the crude, flamboyant England of the Middle Ages in every detail. It is a story filled with the ravages of war and the rhythms of daily life.

Green City in the Sun written by Barbara Wood in 1988. This is a magnificent saga of two proud and powerful families...one British, one African--and their battle over Kenya's destiny in the twentieth century. It is 1917 when pioneer Dr. Grace Treverton arrives in Kenya, determined to bring modern medicine to the natives. Her brother wants to establish an agricultural empire there to rival any in England. But their dreams collide with those of an African family that has lived on the land for generations. An unforgettable novel written with scope and grandeur.

Meeting rooms and equipment rental.

Did you know that the public library has two meeting rooms that are available for public use? If you need a meeting room call the library at 269-6501. The large room seats up to 30 and the smaller meeting room seats six comfortably.

Check with the library if you need audio visual equipment for your next meeting. The public library has screens, video projector, power-point projector, slide, overhead, TV/VCR combination, and opaque projectors.

New 'books on CD'

Thanks to a nice donation from the Montevideo Lions the public library has purchased many new 'books on CD.' These are being processed now and will be available as soon as they are processed.

Library Radio Show

Don't miss the......
Library Radio Show.....on 1460

Tune in to KDMA radio every Friday afternoon at 1:15pm for the "library radio show." A truly uscripted and uncopyrighted 'shoot from the hip' type of show that no one can take seriously. Yet, sometimes, you do actually pick up some valuable information if you listen carefully.

Book Discussion Club

Like to read and discuss books?

We have permanently changed our date to the 3rd Wednesday of each month.

The public library and community center sponsor a 'Book Discussion Club' which meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 10:00am at the community center.

Refreshments are always served along with lots of lively discussion. Meet new people. See old friends. Share your thoughts and feelings.

A new book is selected each month.

For June, 2008, the Book Discussion Club is reading The Last Report of the Miracle at Little Know Horse by Louise Erdrich. The author lives in Minnesota but grew up in North Dakota. The novel captures the spirit of a woman who felt compelled by her beliefs to serve her people as a priest.

Just show up and have some fun!

Our new blog

Hello everyone. My name is Drew Aslesen, and I am the computer geek at the Montevideo Public Library. After attending a technology conference, Dave Lauritsen and I decided that the library needed a blog to keep people up to date on all that is going on here. Blogging is a bit new to me, but in the future we will be having news about the library and the assorted special events that happen here. This blog is the first in our attempt to get more involved with the rapidly evolving digital world.
